Originally from the Shetland Islands and now based in London, Rachael Cohen is an alto saxophonist and composer on the rise with an infectious tone and an uncanny ability for storytelling. One of Cohen’s strongest attributes is her lyrical and controlled phrasing when improvising which she delivers with the ease and sophistication of someone twice her age.
Over the past few years, her live performances and composing skills have caught the attention of the UK Jazz scene, as well as Whirlwind’s own Michael Janisch who produced her debut album Halftime, which was in MOJO Magazines top ten of the year for jazz as well as multiple other international acclaim and accolades.

Line-up: Rachael Cohen – alto sax, Tom Gibbs – piano,
Mark Lewandowski – double bass and Doug Hough – drums.

“A promising new talent… [Cohen is] a player who’s not afraid to leave her sound exposed and who’s aware of the importance of space and emotion.”

Michael Janisch’s Paradigm Shift

Michael 2ccc

American bassist, composer, producer and record label owner Michael Janisch is one of the preeminent bassist/bandleaders of his generation working in jazz and experimental musics.  On October 2 he releases his second solo recording Paradigm Shift and debuts his new sextet of the same name.  Paradigm Shift is a double disc album featuring new original material (including disc one that is solely comprised of the ‘Paradigm Shift Suite’) composed by the leader with some choice originals by his bandmates.  The music was initially recorded live by his acoustic quintet after a two-week European tour and was subsequently taken into the studio for post production augmentation by Janisch and electronics wizard Alex Bonney.  Janisch’s new band Paradigm Shift will include Bonney on the live shows thus pairing the acoustic quintet with real-time electronic manipulation, presenting an engaging sonic program of music that mixes contemporary jazz, electronica, funk, rock, punk and free improv alongside anthemic themes, otherworldly sounds and infectious grooves.
Line-up: Michael Janisch – double and electric basses,
Cedric Hanriot – pianos and keys, Alex Bonney – electronics and trumpet, Paul Booth – saxophones, flutes and didgeridoo and Colin Stranahan – drums.

“Janisch seizes the instrument with a blend of speed and energy as if he wants to be melody, harmony and rhythm all at once.”

Michael Janisch – double bass and  Doug Hough – drums.

“Tom is a very great talent indeed, go along and be amazed.”
